An Introduction to High Entropy Alloys and Recent Developments

Prof. Peter K. Liaw (廖楷輝教授)

The University of Tennessee, Knoxville, Tennessee, USA

Abstract

In the last decade, a new class of materials, called high-entropy alloys (HEAs), has been proposed and developed. The definition of HEAs is described. The application potential of HEAs will be discussed. The great interests are still paid even nowadays. The alloy-design strategy of combining multiple elements in near-equimolar ratios has shown great potential for producing exceptional engineering materials, often known as “HEAs”. The superior properties of HEAs are presented, relative to conventional materials. The potential applications of HEAs could include (1) high entropy superalloys, (2) carbides and cermets with HEA-binders, (3) HEA hard coatings, (4) HEA diffusion barriers, (5) irradiation-resistant HEAs, (6) iomaterials, etc. The results suggest that the HEA-design strategy may be used to develop a wide range of complex materials, which are not limited to single-phase solid solutions.
